Simulation Laboratory
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing at the University of Arkansas greatly expanded
its simulation laboratory with the opening of the Epley Center for Health Professions
in January 2012.
The lab is designed to give students hands-on clinical experience. It includes:
- Fundamentals laboratory
- Health-assessment laboratory
- Intensive-care unit
- Pediatrics room
- Labor and delivery room
- Two-room medical-surgical unit
Each room contains high-fidelity mannequins that can simulate symptoms, diseases and conditions, as well as labor and delivery, that nurses will see in a real health-care environment. Cameras in the lab send data from the "patient rooms" to any of three classrooms in the simulation lab. The simulations are recorded, and students and simulation facilitators can review the videos to learn from the students' experiences. Simulation operation technicians oversee the mannequins, including verbal communication, from a control room.
Other features of the lab:
- Bedside laptops to prepare students for their clinical experience in documentation within an electronic health record
- Similar equipment to that used in clinical agencies where nursing students receive their on-site clinical training
- Head wall units to simulate oxygen administration and suctioning when necessary
- Medication carts and a medication supply room
- Crash carts
- Electrocardiogram (EKG) machines
- Ventilators
- Defibrillators
